Glow-in-the-dark mini golf: what to expect
Glow-in-the-dark mini golf, also called blacklight or glow golf, is played indoors in a dark room. Ultraviolet lamps make the fluorescent paint on the lanes, walls and props glow, and the balls are fluorescent too. The holes are like those on any mini golf course, but the dark room and the colors make it feel quite different.
How a round works
You pay at the counter, get a putter, a ball and a scorecard, and walk into the course. Most glow courses have 18 holes, some fewer. Your eyes adjust to the dark within a minute or two. Score as usual: count strokes, stop at the house limit, lowest total wins.
What to wear
White and neon colors light up under blacklight, which is half the fun for photos. White shoelaces, T-shirts and even teeth glow. Nothing special is required, though. Leave sunglasses at home, obviously, and wear shoes you can walk in, because some courses have ramps, steps or bridges.
Kids, groups and parties
Glow courses are popular for birthday parties because they work in any weather and most kids can play from about age four. Some venues build their whole course around a theme, such as monsters, outer space or the deep sea, with animated figures and sound effects. That's great for most kids but can be a bit much for the very young, so check photos if you're unsure.
Glow mini golf vs. regular indoor mini golf
Not every indoor course is a glow course. Many malls and family fun centers have indoor courses with normal lighting, and newer bar-style venues focus on food, drinks and automatic scoring rather than blacklight. Our indoor mini golf guide compares the different kinds.
